I just bought my daughter a portable CD player: https://open.substack.com/pub/kristinwritesmuch/p/the-discman-adventures?r=1iil3&utm_medium=ios&shareImageVariant=overlay

I’ve been buying vinyl here and there over the past couple of years.

Omg the farts in literature is fantastic!!!

LOVE the Louise Erdrich books! I know I’ve read the first four in the Love Medicine series!

Another Native writer, Leslie Marmom Silko has a book where she says that in Inuit there are over 50 words describing snow (maybe it was ice?) I’m going to have to try to find that again.

Another tidbit- as part of a language project, there is an Ojibwe dictionary that has like 100+ ways to say different types of farts! I’m going to have to see if I can find that one again!

I think I'm gonna have to revisit Erdrich. It's been a minute. She's just so brilliant. I thought the thing about 100 words for snow wasn't true - if you find out more, I'd love to know. And I think I've seen that Ojibwe dictionary but did NOT know about the farts!!! You know what to do if you find that info lol.

I will definitely send that Ojibwe language thing along when I find it!! (I may be exaggerating the number there lol)

And yeah, I did a quick google search and so much conflicting information about how many words for snow the Inuit have! LOL I did run across something that said Boas verified there were more than 50 (I’m sure the Silko book said over 100).

Erdrich’s books are soooo good! It’s been probably 25-30 years since I’ve read them! I know I bought Tales of Burning Love, but I don’t think I read it.

Are you on StoryGraph? I think I'm gonna revisit Erdrich now. You can do buddy reads on there! There are too many books I want to read and not enough time!!

Kristin DeMarr's avatar

Yeah, I haven’t had much time to read, and so many I want to read!!

I’ve never heard of StoryGraph!

It's a Black-owned alternative to Goodreads! I really like it. https://thestorygraph.com/ https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/tonimcl

I too would make my entire world around the smol owl in my car. I would speak of nothing else for days.

I never gave up physical media. Some techbro can't take away my CDs, BluRays, and paper books.

I have plans for a screechie tattoo this year; I love them so much. And I am so glad we kept our CDs; I think it might be time to get a player again.

I have always been an owl person. You can imagine how many I've accumulated over the decades. I was into them before they were cool. My brother got me a replica of an Egyptian carving from the Met when I was in high school, and it hangs in pride of place in my hall, where I see it every morning when I leave the bedroom. I latch-hooked a pillow. I have many stuffies. Be sure to show us the tattoo when it's healed!

Once I was at a session with birds of prey who'd been rehabbed and used for education. Owls, eagles, hawks, etc. The handler demonstrated by holding the mic up to the eagle's wing and having it flap. FLAP FWAP FLAP. Then he did it with the owl. Absolute silence, even amplified. The whole room went "oooohhh". It is pretty damn cool to have raptors fly right over your head, indoors.

I still have VHS tapes and a working player, ditto cassettes. Cold dead hands!
